Get Out
By KYLE THOMAS MCGOVERN, Local ReporterQuestlove requests your attention. Or, more accurately, not.
Tonight and tomorrow, the Roots drummer will present âShuffle Culture,â an experimental live performance at the Brooklyn Academy of Music thatâs designed to mimic the short attention span of iPod-age music consumers.
The âLate Night with Jimmy Fallonâ bandleader will be joined on stage by psychedelic indie rockers Deerhoof and comedian and beatbox musician Reggie Watts, to compose a suite of disparate beats, hooks and distortion that will jump from genre to song like a digital music fan hitting the ânext songâ arrow button.
âThe idea is to re-create the experience of someone flipping through their collection of music,â Questlove told the Daily News this week.
The two-night event is more than just a show, but a larger commentary on how technology â" and attention spans â" affect the way people listen to music. In its 75-minute running time, Questlove said he and his fellow musicians would perform portions of 40 songs.
Shuffle culture, indeed.
âShuffle Cultureâ at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, 30 Lafayette Avenue between Ashland Place and Saint Felix Street, (718) 636-4100, April 19 and 20, 8 p.m. Tickets start at $25. For info, visit www.bam.org.
