Library plans tutorial on handheld technology - Staunton News Leader

Are you puzzled as to what the difference is between an iPad and an iPod? Don't be embarrassed. You probably aren't the only one.

That's why the Staunton Public Library is giving the community a chance to see, learn about and touch some of the latest gadgets at their program titled, "Kindles, Nooks and iPod's, Oh My!"

Melissa Davidson, adult services librarian, said that thanks to a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the Library of Virginia has established regional technology centers with a variety of gadgets.

"Staff from the Shenandoah County Public Library will be bringing a variety of eReaders, tablets, Kindles, Nooks, iPads and iPods to the Staunton Public Library that participants can test-drive," she said.

If you've seen ads on TV and wonder what all the fuss is about, or are considering purchasing an eReader, this event will offer a hands-on opportunity with no pressure from salespeople.

Davidson adds that events like these help to support the library's mission to acquire, organize and provide access and guidance to a wide variety of information and materials.

"It helps to fulfill the intellectual, educational, social and recreational needs of all the people in the city," she said.

"We try to offer programs on a variety of subjects and computer programs and related technology are the most requested."
