Ever wish you could surf the Web with your iPod touch when you're not connected to Wi-Fi? Soon you'll be able to, with FreedomPop's $99 4G iPod Sleeve.
The FreedomPop Sleeve snaps on to any iPod touch to provide it with a connection to FreedomPop's 4G network, essentially letting you use it as an iPhoneâ"without having to pay a monthly fee. Pre-orders start today.
Using the 4G Sleeve, iPod users will be able to surf the Web, stream video, and connect to Wi-Fi anywhere FreedomPop's 4G network exists. It will also allow you to use your iPod as a wireless hotspot to connect up to eight additional devices to it. FreedomPop plans to add free voice calls over time, but you'll have to use a VoIP client to make calls until that happens.
So how does it work? With the FreedomFriends plan, you get 500MB of free data every month. You also get an additional 10MB of data for every friend you refer, up to 1GB per month. Heavier data users will be able to earn up to 5GB of additional free data by engaging in partner offers and promotions, and friends can share and request data from one another. If you need more than that, or you just want your data without having to jump through hoops, it's available for "below market costs."
As for connectivity, FreedomPop's sevice will launch on Clearwire's 4G WiMAX network, and will switch to Sprint's 4G LTE network early next year.
FreedomPop is also taking pre-orders for its Freedom Sleeve 4G for the iPhone 4 and 4S, which allows you to use your iPhone with one if its plans.
"When we announced our iPhone 4G Sleeve, we received thousands of emails asking for a similar device for the iPod," said FreedomPop COO Steven Sesar. "We listened and have worked tirelessly to make this device a reality in time for our launch. This new device is a big step toward FreedomPopâs aim of disrupting the mobile broadband market and providing all Americans with access to free, fast, reliable wireless Internet."
The projected ship date for these devices is currently late summer. Check back with PCMag for a closer look when they become available.
