Sounds like four wireless speakers - Herald Sun

philips speakers

Despite their odd appearance, these speakers from Philips produce high-quality sound. Source: National Features

STEREOS no longer need wires. Here are four speakers that will never trouble you with tangled cables.

1. PHILIPS DS9800W

Philips, $999

philips.com.au

Rating: 4/5

These speakers barely look like speakers at all. Made from handcrafted, lacquered wood, they appear more like two flower buds ready to bloom. The sphere-shaped creations deliver crisp sound with very little distortion, helped by two tweeters and one mid-woofer. These high-end speakers are also equipped for Apple's AirPlay and users can hook up an Apple gadget to this system wirelessly using a Philips app that loads when connected. The speakers must be connected by a cord, sullying their wireless effect, and offer no iPod dock option.

2. GUNN AUDIO iWALL PREMIER

Access All Areas - Digital Pass

Gunn Audio, $349

gunnaudio.com.au

Rating: 4.5/5

Australian-based Gunn Audio has created an impressive musical monolith in this device. The iWall Premier stands 1m tall, is far from portable and features four speakers and a large screen on its front. It is big for a reason, though, as this device features an 8-inch subwoofer, a 3.5-inch driver and a domed tweeter. It sports 600 watts of power and promises to deliver 85 decibels of sound. Music can be added to this monster via an iPod dock or a Bluetooth connection, letting you stream songs to the device.

3. LOGITECH UA AIR SPEAKER

Logitech, $499

logitech.com/au

Rating: 3/5

Curved like a rocking chair leg, this Logitech speaker has a striking appearance. The UA Air Speaker can operate like any other iPod-powered stereo thanks to a dock that springs from its facade and offers a 30-pin Apple connection. Only three controls sit atop this stereo, making it easy to use. The Air Speaker is so named because it can connect to wireless networks however, giving it hidden depths. Plug in an iPhone and an app appears that will guide you through this process. Once connected, users can control music from their device iPhone (or an iPad, iPod Touch or computer) and listen to it stream through the speaker. It produces an impressive stereo effect but it's not capable of the same volume or clarity as its peers.

4. BIG JAMBOX

Jawbone, $359

jawbone.com

Rating: 4.5/5

You wouldn't believe such a small speaker, without so much as a wire attached, could pump out music quite as loudly or as clearly as this Jawbone creation. The Big Jambox is a bigger brother to the original Jawbone creation, though it is still just 25.6cm long and weighs 1.2kg, making it a portable party monster. Like the smaller version, this speaker features patterns in its exterior mesh and comes in bright or muted colours. This speaker adds large external controls and uses powerful audio equipment, including neodymium drivers and opposing passive bass radiators for sound that booms on big notes. It connects to any phone, tablet or computer with Bluetooth, so it can also be used to take calls, and its built-in rechargeable battery will work for up to 15 hours from a 2 1/2 hour charge. It's one for audio lovers on the move.
