Will iPhone 5 cannibalize the iPod? - TECH.BLORGE.com

While most Apple fans are anxiously awaiting the announcement and release of the iPhone 5, Apple also plans on releasing a completely refreshed iPod lineup.

Remember the iPod? That cute little rectangular device that can cram thousands of hours of music in your pocket?

It seems the iPhone might be on the verge of killing off Apple’s iPod, the device that completely rejuvenated the Cupertino, Cali.-based computer company.

Apple will announce the iPhone 5 on Sept. 12 in San Francisco, and will also announce its brand new iPod family. Rumors have obviously been spotty on the updated iPods, as most technology blogs, including Blorge, have centered their focus on the iPhone 5.

What we do know about the new iPods: They will continue to come in multiple colors and all three types â€" iPod Shuffle, iPod Nano and iPod Touch â€" will remain. They could completely redesigned, however.

You can still by the classic iPod, which features 160 GB of storage (40,000 songs), today for $250.

Additionally, there have been rumors that the iPod will be able to take advantage of iCloud and stream music wirelessly.

It seems today’s working professionals have an iPhone as their main source for listening to music. They may use an iPad while at work or on the go, or even their MacBook, but it’s rare to see someone carry an iPhone and an iPod.

It seems that Apple will be targeting the iPod to children who wouldn’t be ready for an iPhone â€" or any cellphone â€" quite yet. Apple would essentially train children to use the iOS device and have them eventually graduate up to an iPhone when the time is right.

The iPod will also soon find its place in schools â€" especially the iPod Touch â€" which is like a small iPad. Even so, Apple will have a difficult time marketing their iPod Touch once they release their iPad Mini, a smaller version of their popular tablet, sometime before the holiday shopping season.

Will the iPhone 5 finally cannibalize the iPod? It seems unlikely, but Apple is definitely shifting its focus away from its flagship device.

What are your thoughts on the iPod? Can it survive?
