SHOPLIFTING AT WINCO

Officers responded to Winco Foods for a report of a 40-year-old woman in custody for shoplifting.

She was detained after attempting to conceal a laser cat toy and a pair of reading glasses. She did not have any identification and was crying and upset when she gave officers her name. When the officer said he would call her son from her cell phone to verify her identity, she eventually admitted that she gave police the wrong name.

She said that she was on the phone with her husband trying to figure out if she picked out the right laser when she accidentally walked out of the store with the unpaid items.

Later, police watched the surveillance footage and saw her removing tags from the reading glasses and laser before concealing the items.

She was charged with third-degree theft.

DUI, POSSESSION OF MARIJUANA

Police observed a Honda Accord traveling southbound on the 4500 block of East Valley Highway that was turning its headlights on and off as it cruised down the street. The officer followed the vehicle and observed it make an illegal turn and cross the center line. When it approached the BNSF Railroad crossing on Puyallup St., the vehicle veered sharply to the right in order to avoid hitting the plastic upright barriers. The vehicle's rear tires broke away and it fishtailed several times before the officer pulled the driver over.

The 31-year-old driver appeared intoxicated and smelled of liquor. He admitted he had “a little bit to drink.” When he was arrested, officers found marijuana among his property.

He was found later to be over double the legal limit. The man was cited with driving while intoxicated, driving with a suspended license and possession of marijuana.

STRONGARM ROBBERY

Sumner units were dispatched to a report of a robbery with a gun behind the portables at Sumner Junior High School. The 19-year-old male victim was at a neighbor’s house and appeared to be badly beaten. He said that the suspects left in a green minivan but officers could not locate it near the school.

He said that earlier in the day, he met up with two men at the skate park to smoke marijuana. Later, the victim needed a ride home so the men picked him up in a green minivan.

They drove to Sumner Jr. High behind the portables to smoke marijuana. One of the men kept asking the victim about his iPod Touch and if he wanted to sell it. The victim said the suspect kept his hoodie over his face but had the outline of a gun in his sweatshirt pocket.

The victim said the suspect didn’t show him the gun but suggested they walk behind the portables to smoke. There, the suspect punched him in the nose and the victim immediately ran away. The three men chased him and surrounded him at Sumner Ave. and Maybell St., where they started punching and kicking him. The victim said he fought back as best he could but that the suspect demanded the iPod Touch. He gave it to him and ran to the nearest home for help.

He told police he left his long board in the suspect van that had a sticker on the bottom wit a pot leaf that said “Legalize It!” It was his only means of transportation.

While talking with police, the victim’s cell phone rang and he recognized it as the man who stole his iPod. He put the call on speaker and police heard the man threaten the victim to give him the password to the iPod and to meet them behind the portables again to get it back.

About that time, a fellow officer was at Winco and picked up one of the men from the van. He resisted arrest and kicked a patrol car when they attempted to take him into custody. Police found the van nearby with the two other men inside.

When the men were taken into custody police spotted the long board in the backseat of the van.

The men denied that the victim was ever in the van that day and thought his long board had been there for a while. They also denied carrying a gun.

After some interrogation, one of the men admitted that the two other men beat and kicked the victim and that one of them had stolen an Apple product from his coat pocket.

The three men were all booked in jail for robbery first degree. One of the men was also charged with malicious mischief.

STOLEN REFRIGERATOR

Officers responded to a burglary at a residence on 56th St. E. A real estate agent met the officers and said that when she arrived at the unoccupied house to install a carbon monoxide detector, she noticed the sliding glass door was open and the refrigerator was missing.

The residence was vacant and the house was supposed to close in a sale that day. The real estate agent said she was doubtful that the closing would occur now, since there was a burglary and the refrigerator was missing.

The homeowner was contacted and she said that she turned the alarm system off weeks before because several agents had been in and out showing her home. She said she had no idea who broke in but thought it was odd that all the thieves took was the refrigerator.
