Report: Changing iPod song leads to crash in Butler County - Lincoln Journal Star

A two-vehicle crash in eastern Butler County on Saturday resulted in both drivers being flown by helicopter to a Lincoln hospital for treatment of their injuries.

According to reports filed by the Butler County Sheriff's Office, Andrea S. Nicolas, 28, of David City was driving a 2001 Dodge minivan eastbound on Nebraska 92 just east of V Road when the collision occurred about 5:55 p.m. Saturday.

The report stated that Nicolas said she was changing a song on her iPod and took her attention off the road.

At the same time, Hanna D. Maschmann, 22 of Davenport, was traveling westbound in a 2003 Oldsmobile and saw the van coming at her in the westbound lane.

Maschmann swerved into the eastbound lane to avoid the van. Nicolas then realized that she has crossed the center line and steered back into the eastbound lane, the report stated.

The van and the Oldsmobile collided head on. Nicolas' van spun 180 degrees and stopped on the roadway. The Olsmobile also spun 180 degrees and left the roadway, rolled and came to rest on the passenger side of the vehicle.

Maschmann was removed from her car by other motorists who stopped to help, and the Oldsmobile caught fire.

Nicolas had reported having one alcoholic drink in the hour before the crash. The report stated that it was "unknown whether alcohol was a factor."

Both victims were transpoted to Butler County Health Care Center in David city and then flown by helicopter to BryanLGH Medical Center West trauma unit for observation.
