A bit more gloom, but then some sun - WLBZ-TV

I generally consider myself a jovial guy, (contrary to popular belief, you don't have to be fat and/or an elf to use that adjective) but this recent weather has knocked me down a notch in the fun department. Previous drought concerns aside, our pattern since the beginning of May has been decidedly lame.

You know it's bad when you are carefully selecting your iPhone (I'd say iPod but no one uses those anymore, it's one step up from a WalkMan...don't embarrass yourself) playlist as to not elicit a bad vibe by stumbling into a "shuffle" mix featuring Radiohead, Coldplay or The Smiths (select songs only).

Ok, enough whining from me...here's some good news: we will finally get into some extended sunshine starting on Saturday afternoon and lasting through Tuesday morning.

For the rest of today, however, look for cloudy skies and scattered showers. The main swath of precipitation has already cleared the region and is headed into the Gulf of Maine, but it's not all that dry back to the west. As a result look for a tapering of the rainfall from "rain" to "showers/drizzle" through the afternoon. Temperatures have stalled in the upper 40s to low 50s in most spots and I don't see any reason they should rise through the rest of the day with a cooling onshore flow.

A trailing cold front will swing through tonight bringing another organized line of showers and maybe even a rumble of thunder. The rest of the evening will be more of what we've seen for the past few days, mostly cloudy skies, some fog and some drizzle.

Lingering showers and clouds will fill out the first few hours of Saturday, but some clearing should take place by the afternoon. High pressure will be sagging down from Canada, bringing in some dry air at the mid levels of the atmosphere. Now, it kind of depends which model you believe in terms of how quickly we clear out on Saturday. Our trusty RPM model has sunshine by 9 AM. Personally, I think that's a bit aggressive and between me, you, and the wall the RPM has had one screw loose lately when it comes to ending precipitation. Meanwhile, the GFS has us clearing by mid day...I think that's just right. Either way, we should close out Saturday with much more pleasant conditions.

Sunday and Monday are both a lock to be beautiful days as high pressure builds in overhead. Since we aren't really "troughed out" in terms of the jetstream, temperatures will respond nicely when the sun is added to the equation. I expect highs in the upper 60s to low 70s for the close of the weekend and the beginning of the next work week.

Back to unsettled conditions by Tuesday afternoon with some heavy rain likely for mid-week. Oh well, enjoy the sun.

About the iPod thing: I'm able to grant an iPod exception in the following cases: 1) you have a Nano and prefer the smaller size 2) you run long distances and the iPhone is too bulky to carry with 3) your biceps are just too muscley and huge to wear one of those armband holders....I feel your pain there, I've been popping the fabric on those bad boys with my enormous guns since 2009.
