Changing iPod song led to double fatal - ABC Online

Updated August 08, 2012 14:03:51

A court has been urged to jail a man who took his eyes off the road to change the music on his iPod, causing a double fatality.

Michael Wayne Gill, 28, was found guilty of two counts of causing death by dangerous driving.

He rolled a four-wheel-drive towing a trailer of building materials on the Stuart Highway, north of Coober Pedy, in May 2010.

Two workmates died when they were thrown from the four-wheel drive.

The Adelaide District Court was told Gill failed to notice how quickly he was gaining on a van in front, because he was operating his iPod.

He swerved but crashed and prosecutors told the court the victims were not wearing seatbelts.

But the prosecution argued that did not mitigate Gill's inattentive driving.

It said Gill had no training in driving with a heavy trailer and had been travelling at high speed.

He will be sentenced next week.
