Find a House - Wall Street Journal

Whether you're searching for a rental or a home to buy, mobile apps can make your job much easier. These software offerings can tap into the global positioning system in your smartphone or tablet to help you find nearby listings and open housesâ€"and even driving directions to places you want to check out.

For renters, Escargot Studios LLC's free apps serve up listings from the Craigslist want-ads site. Craigslist Pro for Android and Craigslist Mobile (not to be confused with the app of the same name from YHH Creative) for iPhone and iPod offer listings with thumbnail photos, maps, direct access to your Craigslist account, multicity searches and automated selection using your GPS coordinates. Upgrade for $1.99 on both Android and Apple devices, and the app will notify you when an ad appears that meets your requirementsâ€"particularly useful for hot rental markets like New York or San Francisco.

Realtor.com can track down nearby listings using your GPS.

If you're looking to buy a home, check out the free Zillow app. Offered by Zillow Inc., the app shows home prices scattered on a map, and one tap will bring up the listing, photo and information about the last sale price of a home. With one glance, it's easy to see which neighborhoods are in your price range. The app also lets you save searches and gives information on mortgage rates. Another free app, from Move Inc.'s Realtor.com, gives you mobile access to sales listings for more than four million homes. You can track down nearby listings using your GPS, as well as narrowing your search to foreclosures or homes with reduced prices.
